PENGERTIAN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Dalam pembahasan ekoarsitekur, sustainable development
merupakan suatu tujuan yang harus dicapai. Dalam hal ini ekoarsitektur/greenarchitecture merupakan salah satu
aspek penting dengan orientasi pada alam (ekologi) dari pembangunan
berkelanjutan (sustainable development).
Desain yang berkelanjutan (sustainable design) merupakan salah satu bagian yang terlingkupi
oleh pembangunan yang berkelanjutan (sustainable
development). Terdapat banyak pengertian pembangunan kelanjutan. Yang
terkenal dan sering dijadikan rujukan adalah pengertian dari world commision on environtment and development
(WCED).
“Sustainable development is
develoment that meets and needs of the present without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs”.
Sedangkan definisi-definisi lain mengenai pembangunan
berkelanjutan antara lain sebagai berikut.
“Sustainable development means
improving the quality of life while living within the carrying capacity of
supporting ecosystems”; World Conservation Union, UN Environment Programme and
World Wide Fund For Nature (1991), dalam Okta Zaida Ratnasari.
“Sustainable development is
development that delivers basic environmental, social and economic services to
all residents of a community without threatening the viability of the natural, built and social system upon which
the delivery of these services depends”; International Council For Local
Environtmental Initiatives (1994), dalam Okta Zaida Ratnasari.
